The Chairperson of the State Agency for Child Protection Dr. Eleonora Lilova took part in an online meeting of the Council of Europe’s Steering Committee for the Rights of the Child in her capacity as a representative of Bulgaria. The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on the preparation of the Council of Europe’s Strategy on the Rights of the Child (2022-2027). The meeting was attended by about 100 representatives from all European countries and members of the Council of Europe.
The meeting discussed the results of the Council of Europe's Sofia Strategy on the Rights of the Child (2016-2021), as well as a retrospection of all Council of Europe strategies over the years. It was emphasized that children's policies are a priority for the Council of Europe as well as for the member states. The main conclusion is that the strategy gives them important guidelines and supports them in implementing policies for children.
The participants in the meeting shared about the serious challenges facing all countries in connection with the new school year during the pandemic. Emphasis was placed not only on the importance of complying with health recommendations, but also on maintaining the mental health of children. Concerns in different countries regarding face-to-face and distance learning during the school year in the context of the epidemic were also shared.
During the meeting, the members of the Committee discussed the lessons learned from the strategy ending next year, outlining the steps related to the development of the new strategy (2022-2027).
